Generation One

1. JOHN¹ HUGHES¹^,² was born in 1810 in Ireland. He married Mary E Leek in (Estimated date.. ) in 1850. He died in Woodsfield, Ohio.
He John and Mary were farmers in Monroe County. It is still a mystery as to how he and Mary migrated to Monroe County, but further research is continuing. I believe I know his brothers & sisters, but have not verified them yet.

2. i. EDWARD BERNARD² Edward was born in Woodsfield, Monroe, Ohio , in 12/ /1852. He married Rebecca Ann Dougherty Hughes in St Sylvesters Roman Catholic Church, Woodsfield, Monroe, Ohio , on 10/14/1873. Edward died on 5/30/1903 in Toronto, Jefferson, Ohio , at age 50. He was buried on 6/2/1903 in Union Cemetery Section R, Toronto, Jefferson, Ohio.

3. ii. HENRY P was born on 3/27/1855 in Woodsfield, Monroe, Ohio. He married Mary Ricer. He died on 1/21/1938 in burried at St Sylvester Cenetery, Woodsfield, Monroe, Ohio , at age 82.

iii. MARY A was born in 1858 in Woodsfield, Monroe, Ohio. She married John W. T. Varner in Woodsfield, Monroe, Ohio , on 8/29/1883.

iv. JOHN was born in 1860 in Woodsfield, Monroe, Ohio.

v. SARAH E was born in 1861. She married Vincent E Dillon in Woodsfield, Monroe, Ohio , on 8/4/1889.

Generation Two

2. EDWARD BERNARD² HUGHES (John¹). Edward was born in Woodsfield, Monroe, Ohio , in 12/ /1852. He married Rebecca Ann Dougherty Hughes in St Sylvesters Roman Catholic Church, Woodsfield, Monroe, Ohio , on 10/14/1873. Edward died on 5/30/1903 in Toronto, Jefferson, Ohio , at age 50.³ He was buried on 6/2/1903 in Union Cemetery Section R, Toronto, Jefferson, Ohio.
He and his five brothers, in the early 20's, were in business in adjacent buildings on Main street in Toronto, Ohio. Richard had a confectionay, Charles & Lawrence had the C.E.&L. Furniture store next door. Jerome & Stephen had a Meat Market next to the store. In the late 20's the market closed and Jerome's family, with the exception of Hank, relocated in the Canton Area.

Due to poor health Richard and his family moved to Pasadena California and "Tebe" took over the Candy Store, to the delight of his 7 children! Charlie retired from C.E.&L. in l932 because of a heart condition. In 1947, Lawrence and his sons became sole owners and the name changed to the "Hughes Furniture Co." After 64 years at the same location 411-21 Main St., the store closed it's doors Sept 6, 1986. Edward and Rebecca's 9 children were all born in Monroe Co. (The history list "John" born nov 30th, 1874, no doubt he died at birth).

4. i. BANARD LINDEN "BARNEY"³ Banard was born in Woodsfield, Monroe, Ohio , on 1/13/1877. He married Blanche Catherine Devlin Hughes on 11/16/1914.

5. ii. MARY ALICE Mary was born in Woodsfield, Monroe, Ohio , on 2/15/1878. She married Bernard "Matt" Wheeligan. She died in 1937 in Toronto, Jefferson, Ohio. She was buried in 1937 in Union Cemetery Section R, Toronto, Jefferson, Ohio.

6. iii. HENRY JEROME Henry was born in Woodsfield, Monroe, Ohio , on 12/19/1879. He married Margaret (Maggie) ? Hughes. Henry died in 1925 in Toronto, Ohio. He was buried in 1925 in Union Cemetery Section R, Toronto, Jefferson, Ohio.

7. iv. JAMES ELLSWORTH James was born in Woodsfiled, Monroe, Ohio , on 8/14/1881. He married Iva Mariam "Ivy" Lawson Hughes. James died on 12/6/1954 in Toronto, Ohio , at age 73.

8. v. STEPHEN OSWALD "TEBE" Stephen was born in Woodsfield, Ohio , on 11/16/1883. He married Catherine Gertrude "Mom-Mom" McCuean Hughes in Toronto, Ohio , on 8/7/1906. Stephen died on 7/10/1955 in Home, Toronto, Ohio , at age 71. He was buried on 7/13/1955 in Union Cemetery, Toronto, Jefferson, Ohio.

9. vi. RICHARD IRVIN Richard was born in Woodsfield, Monroe, Ohio , in 2/ /1886. He married Mary Elizabeth Mulhall Hughes in Toronto, Ohio. Richard died on 7/10/1961 at age 75.

10. vii. CHARLES EMERY "CHARLIE" Charles was born in Woodsfield, Monroe, Ohio , on 3/20/1889. He married Annabelle Marks Hughes on 6/21/1916. Charles died on 2/27/1959 at age 69.

viii. LILLIAN AGATHA. Lillian was born in Woodsfield, Monroe, Ohio , on 7/3/1892. Lillian died in 7/ /1964 in Toronto, Ohio.
Affectionally know as "Dede" She "Burped" - "diapered" and "Babied" a lot of little Hughes' in her lifetime! She was one of a Kind!

11. ix. LAWRENCE IGNATIOUS "BUMPS" Lawrence was born in Woodsfield, Monroe, Ohio , on 1/30/1894. He married Mary Elizabeth Ferguson Hughes on 7/11/1921. Lawrence died on 1/2/1979 in Toronto, Ohio , at age 84. He was buried on 1/5/1979 in Union Cemetery Section R, Toronto, Jefferson, Ohio.

3. HENRY P² HUGHES (John¹)⁴ was born on 3/27/1855 in Woodsfield, Monroe, Ohio. He married Mary Ricer. He died on 1/21/1938 in burried at St Sylvester Cenetery, Woodsfield, Monroe, Ohio , at age 82.

iv. MARTHA ELOISE was born on 5/30/1897 in Woodsfield, Ohio. She married Ervin Crum. She died on 11/27/1976 at age 79.

v. FRANCIS (FRANK) JEROME was born on 9/8/1899 in Woodsfield, Ohio. He married Martha Zwick. He died on 5/23/1975 at age 75.

vi. ROSE M was born on 9/27/1901 in Woodsfield, Ohio.⁶ She married Francis Archer in Woodsfield, Ohio. She died on 2/20/1971 at age 69.

vii. JOSEPHINE was born on 4/23/1906. She married Francis Mehler. She died in 1/ /1989 at age 82.

viii. DOROTHY was born on 1/23/1912 in Woodsfield, Ohio. She married William Mehler. She died on 1/31/1962 at age 50.

Mary died on 12/23/1966 in Home, Toronto, Ohio , at age 59. Her body was interred on 12/26/1966 in Toronto, Ohio , in Union Cemetery.

v. ANNA DOLORES "NUNNY." Anna was born in Toronto, Ohio , on 4/15/1909. She married Deadrick Lavendar "Ted" Byrd in St Francis Roman Catholic Church, Toronto, Ohio , on 1/29/1936.
Nunny insists there is nothing extraordinary about her and what she does, but her friends and neighbors say otherwise. "She seems to have a lot of faith in human nature, " said neighbor Joe Mihalik. "She never gives any alibis - she's always there to help." She just runs and runs and I can't keep up with her," said Lois Doran, "People ask her for help and she does it - no questions asked." Maybe Nunny and Ted did not have any children to call their own, but we her nephews and neices (her children) all pay the highest tribute to the greatest Aunt God placed on this earth. I know there will be a high place in heaven for Nunny and I only hope if I get there, I can reach up to her and give her one more kiss for all the wonderful love she gave her family and friends.

iii. MARY KATHRYN. Mary was born on 7/19/1922. She married Marvin Lewis Canada on 11/21/1959. She died on 10/28/2007 in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio , at age 85. She was buried on 10/31/2007 in Alton Cemetery, Fr Thomas Buffer Celebrant at St Stephen the Martyr Church, Columbus, Franklin, Ohio.¹¹
All four of Marvin's children are step children to Mary Kathryn.

11. LAWRENCE IGNATIOUS "BUMPS"³ HUGHES (Edward², John¹). Lawrence was born in Woodsfield, Monroe, Ohio , on 1/30/1894. He married Mary Elizabeth Ferguson Hughes on 7/11/1921. Lawrence died on 1/2/1979 in Toronto, Ohio , at age 84. He was buried on 1/5/1979 in Union Cemetery Section R, Toronto, Jefferson, Ohio.

Ed retired from Whlng-Pgh Steel at age 62 with more than 30 years, and engaged in his favorite pastime - gardening. Many in Toronto remember "Ed's Little Green House" on Daniel Stree where he sold plants and helped many with their gardening needs. Ed was very active in the Boy Scouts. He attained the highest Scouting Leadership Award of "The Silver Beaver" and the highest Catholic Scouting Award, "The St George Medal. Beside his first love, his family, most of Ed's life was spent at St Francis Church as an Usher, Alter Server, Knights of Columbus, Bingo Committee and was always there to lend a hand when help was needed.
